Where attitude is everything...
Youth Wrestling Club
General Conduct
All athletes and coaches are expected to be gentlemen both on and off the mat with undesirable actions being corrected. Making fun of teammates or acting in an unsportsmanlike manner will not be tolerated. We expect every wrestler to display good, clean sportsmanship while wrestling hard and tough, giving everything humanly possible, while still playing the game as intended and most important – HAVE FUN!!!
Practice
Children are expected to attend practice three nights a week. We understand that children have other obligations like PSR and for 5 or 6 year olds three nights a week may be too much. However, we have noticed in the past that some children attend one night a week and then do not come back for two weeks. This inhibits the wrestler’s ability to maintain a progressive learning level. It is also unfair for the other children who have to wait for the no-show wrestler to be brought up to the current level of learning.
Wrestlers need to arrive at practice and ready to work out. The coaches volunteer their time and expect everyone to be on the mat ready to drill at the practice time starts. This is difficult if your child is late. Practices are generally 6:30 – 8:30 pm.
Proper attire includes t-shirt, shorts, wrestling shoes, and headgear. Wrestlers may want to bring an extra shirt to put on after practices since many sweat a lot during practice.
Street shoes ARE NOT allowed on the mats. Wrestling shoes should only be worn on the mats. Do not wear you’re wrestling shoes to practice. You must change into them once you get to practice. This is a contact sport and no one wants dirt off of the bottom of their shoes to be on the mats. This is very important and there are no exceptions.
Wrestling Room Conduct
We understand that you may want to stay in the wrestling room to watch your child during practice. In the past, we enforced a “Closed Room” policy. This year we have decided to allow parents in the room only if they “watch” and do not try to coach their child from the wall. We want your children to feel comfortable and listen to the coaches so they can learn and progress in wrestling. You are also welcome to sit in the Parents Room located on the right as you enter the building or in the cafeteria (expect for Thursdays during Bingo Night). Thank you for your cooperation.
Parent Participation
Parent participation in any sports is important, but in the sport of wrestling it is essential. Parents need to be aware of the many pressures put upon their athletes. To be able to meet one’s opponent alone in front of hundred, even thousands of people, requires a tremendous amount of courage, class, commitment, and character, but sometimes even this may not be enough. Most, if not all, of our children require and want a great amount of parental approval in their lives whether they acknowledge it or not.
Parent participation should not be confused with parent disruption or intrusion into the workings of the team or upon individual wrestlers, coaches, parents, or fans at practices or tournaments. We encourage parents to be enthusiastic and passionate about the sport.
We not only expect but also demand that spectators and participants associated with the Firebird Youth Wrestling Club always be on their best behavior at all times before, during, and following any wrestling event, regardless of actions of others. Anything less than your total cooperation should not and will not be tolerated.
Tournaments
Various tournaments take place during the course of a season. When the coaches receive notice about tournaments that they believe would be beneficial for our wrestlers, we will provide registration information on our website and at our information table inside the Parent’s Room. Please check this table after practice for important information.
We have a few tournaments on our calendar which are listed as TEAM EVENTS. We would like 100% team participation. No wrestler can participate in a tournament without parent’s consent. Most tournaments are local, but there are a few out of town. Birth certificates will be needed for local and out of town tournaments, so please be prepared.
Weigh-ins for Tournaments
Weigh-ins are sometimes held at Chanel, but mostly at the wrestling site. Weigh-ins that we host are normally done before the start of practive. Please make sure all of your paperwork is complete along with payment. If your child is close to weight and wants to run…he needs to do that before the start of weigh-ins.
Membership Dues
Your membership is as follows: $75 (first child), $50 (second child) and $25 (third child). This fee allows the club to operate for the entire year. Once your fee is paid, there will be no refunds for the remainder of the year.
If your child becomes ill
If your child becomes ill and will miss practice, please call a coach to let them know. This will also apply should your child become ill and has registered for a tournament. Please call a coach so they can let the tournament directors know.

Wrestling is a contact sport and because of that proper hygiene is extremely important. Our mats are disinfected every day, but we need your help to make sure our children stay healthy.
